Thrifty Inspiration: Audrey Horne Part 1

The hubs and I are currently watching Twin Peaks on Netflix in the rare moment when we have an hour to spare. I often get inspired by the fashions of old shows and the gorgeous Audrey Horne has really got me thinking of spending Fall 2011 in some plaid skirts, fitted sweaters, and red heels. (soft kitten heels due to my recent ruptured disk which is whole other story...)I like to set a goal and post it so I don't lose sight. So here it is!

Thrift goal: Achieve the 1st of 3 of Audrey Horne's hot looks while spending less than $25.

Water Lilies

This was one of those pieces from which I truly took away more than usual. It was hard to pack this one up to send it off to be sold. However, knowing it will be one of the first pieces going up in Atelier's newest gallery in Charleston (where I lived for many years) made it just a tad easier to hand off. :) More details on the new gallery soon!

Little Flags

This is one of those paintings that truly evolved on its own. It began as my attempt to step away from the box-like shapes for a moment and listen to Hundertwasser's quote: "The straight line is ungodly." I admire his ease with breaking out of society's idea that everything should be linear. I identify with how hard it is since my husband is a Land Surveyor for an Engineering firm. His job is to make things line up. So the hubs was delighted when he walked into my studio and saw that I had stepped out of my comfort zone of squaring off compositions and had really made this cool swirling pattern of color formations that bounced all over the canvas with no beginning and no end. I had set it aside and begun working on another piece (as I often do when I know a painting is unfinished but cannot see where it should go.) I picked it back up and stared for a few minutes before I began overpainting most of the composition out. Alas, "Flags" was born. Hey, I tried.

Movie Monday: Niagara, Niagara

Most people think I am trying to take some sort of stand by not watching television or not buying cable. We used to watch so many lovely addictive shows and truly enjoyed them. I have come to realize that once you are as lucky as we are to have several wonderful opportunities and new objectives, one (or two, or three, or a family of four) may have to give up a couple of things. Daily television was one of the first things to go in our family. But movies. Great flicks and and novels I refuse to give up. So like most Americans we joined Netflix. For one thing, the kids can watch all the Dora and Dinosaur Documentaries they want! Over and over and over again. As for us, we attempt to find those movies we "haven't seen in years!" Most of the time, it turns out to be somewhat disappointing. Like when I thought "Mad Love" was going to be as unbelievable as I remembered it being in high school. When I watched it, I realized I could no longer identify with the characters at all. I identified with their (GASP) parents! Either way, we do happen to come up with some truly brilliant films that weren't just "awwwwwesome" back in the 90's. My first Movie Monday will be a film you will not find on Netflix. You actually cannot find it in stores, or on Amazon...OMG. Well, Meghan, where can I find this amazing movie? Answer: Youtube. Oh yes. It is such an amazing movie but there were only a few DVDs made of this fine film and they are apparently all gone. Either way, you can watch this amazing flick in it's entirety on Youtube.

Robin Tunney plays a teenage girl with Tourette's Syndrome from a wealthy family who happens to meet Henry Thomas's character in a five and dime store while they are both shop lifting various items for the fun of it. They are quick friends and fast lovers and suddenly find themselves leaving town in search of a Black Bobby Head in Canada. Check it out. And let me know what you think. It's no "Mad Love". That is for sure.

I know. I know. I can no longer call myself a "blogger" of art and/or fashion. I am even busier than I used to be when I thought I could not possibly fit another adventure into each day. I have now added teaching fitness classes to my usual busy schedule of one full time job, child rearing, barely landscaping, driving kiddos to school/scouts/gymnastics, painting, thrifting, sewing and many more things I am so very grateful to have in my unbelievable life. So there. That is my excuse for the loooooong lag. I don't have time to type anymore. Baha!

I was able to schedule in the time to do some of my beloved thrifting recently when I realized we are getting close to Halloween! Time to break out the sewing machine so we were on the hunt for sheets...I found some major lovelies and will be listing them in the shop. Happy Day!

I was able to capture the talented Tovah (photographer) and the lovely models with my own camera while they were hard at work. First and foremost, please excuse my lack of posting. We are currently in the midst of selling our home and getting into our NEW HOME! I am insanely excited and can't seem to focus on anything except the new house. So, not many new fashion shots or paintings being completed. Stay tuned though as I am feeling a creative spurt coming on!
I have been thrifting again and like I said, my focus is the house. I wanted to share my vintage home finds (for my own family, sorry won't be putting them in the shop). Although we don't have room for them currently, we have situated them in the window nook until the big move in 29 days. I found the chair/end table and matching end table at Goodwill and the two AMAZING lamps at our local Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries. I snagged them off the guy when he was bringing them out of the back! ha!

I am happy to say that the reason for celebration is seven, count them, SEVEN blissful years of marriage with the best man on Earth. I am so excited to have our romantic evening out tonight. Dinner, strolling through our beautiful city, after dinner cocktails and dessert, and finishing the evening with Knoxville's own Boomsday Firework Extravanganza. Wow.
I have been wanting to wear this all silk vintage jumper for a night on the town and thought tonight would be the perfect night for it. So here is my "What I wore" for today...or tonight.

Upcycling an old skirt of mine

This adorable little skirt has forever been too long on me. I am a real shorty and totally okay with that. Although I frequently clean out my closet or try to do fashion trading with friends, I have kept this skirt for some reason. I wasn't ready to give it to Goodwill. Just knew I could use it for "good" someday. I decided to go ahead and upcycle this baby and put it in the store. I just did my simple "mini bustles" and hitched it up a bit. Totally makes the skirt in my opinion! What do you all think?

I have never really noticed how unbelievably unstable I am. I mean, I know that I am pretty clumsy. Ryan once told me ages ago that I was the clumsiest bartender he had ever met. Ummmm...thanks.

I did notice today while editing photo after photo for my shop, that my instability is very evident if a camera is constantly following me for hours. And I always thought I was a pretty good dancer and gymnast. I am really rethinking things.

I had the pleasure of using my gorgeous cousins as models while I was visiting South Carolina recently. We are more like sisters than cousins though considering how tight knit our family is. They still have dinner together every Sunday night. We only miss it because we are 4 hours away! Anyway, they are beautiful and as Lauren put it "free"! So here they are modeling some new vintage items I am adding to the store. I have so much happening in the next few weeks that I cannot even think straight. I am sewing and painting all the time prepping for Earth Day next week and an art show the following week. Stay tuned for more.

I try to be as green as possible when shipping my items. I make my tags mostly from cardboard beer cases. We LOVE Sierra Nevada. I cinch the clothing tight with strips of magazines so they don't come undone in transit and I try as often as possible to create the package myself from recycled materials. An old friend

The Story:

I found this coat while spending a summer in Charlotte, NC when I was a sophomore in college. I was young and irresponsible then as most college kids and left it in the trunk of a friend's car. I have many pictures of myself and my friends wearing this coat and seriously missed it over the years. I even talked to my husband about how I wish it would find it's way back to me someday. Oddly enough, the universe brought us back together! Leave it to Facebook. My friend and I were back in touch and she happened to mention that she found it cleaning out her closet. Wow.

So it came in the mail one fine day and wouldn't you know it, I realized that the sleeves are too short and I didn't notice this before. My arms are crazy long and always have been. Either way because of my monkey arms, I am forced to sell it as a Vintage item in my store. It is still gorgeous, don't you think?

Creating my own PEACE

My husband and I moved to Knoxville almost 7 years ago into our quaint little yellow 2 bedroom, 1 bath "starter home". It was our intent to live here, save money and move on to "bigger and better" things after a few short years and certainly before we had a second child!!! Well, we kept (in our minds) "saving", simplifying and living below our means. Then we fell in love with an old fixer upper and threw the house on the market right when the housing market crashed. Okie dokie. That didn't pan out.

I will openly admit that I wanted the bigger house, MORE space, MORE bathrooms, MORE MORE MORE. I hate it when I want more. Because I strive each day to simplify. We bake our own bread. We get our eggs from Nana's farm. We grow our own veggies when we can. We recycle everything. We upcycle what we can't recycle. We freecycle what we can't recycle or upcycle. Simple. Keep it simple, Meghan.

I decided today to list the things I adore about our quaint starter home and I thought it would be nice to share my thoughts. I realize that so many people are in housing situations so much worse than ours. We can afford our house when so many cannot.

I am okay with being here a little longer. I don't need the space I crave just like I don't need designer labels or a new car. I am just not that kind of girl. I want to build our dream home out of as many recycled materials as possible and BE the mother and wife I want to be. That is what I want. Not the big house.

So here goes:
1. I LOVE that each morning before school, I lean over our space saving pedestal sink with my two children and we brush our teeth TOGETHER.

2. I LOVE that my children sleep in the same room and share so well because of it.

3. I LOVE that I can sit here in my office/laundry room/sewing room/studio and see into the kitchen where my husband cooks and see into the living room where my kids play.

4. I LOVE that we have an incredible back yard.

5. I LOVE that we don't have stairs.

6. I LOVE that I can see our incredible back yard and the children that play in it from my office/laundry room/sewing room/studio.

7. I LOVE that it isn't just a yellow house, it is what we call "home". It really is.

My six random things:

1. I am related to John C. Calhoun who fathered illegitimate child, Abraham Lincoln.

2. I was an art major in college and never took an art class in my life until sophomore year at College of Charleston.

3. I was once told I must marry a 12 year old Muslim boy while riding a camel in Egypt with him by the Sphinx. (I was 14 years old.) Apparently, if he touches me, I must then marry him in exchange for 3 goats. My aunt cussed him out in Arabic and that was the end of it.

4. I shortly thereafter was held in Customs in Cairo, Egypt since my visa had run out. (Again 14 years old with no parents in the country.) My uncle then cussed them out in Arabic and that was the end of that matter as well.

5. When I received my epidural with my second child, the anesthesiologist (maybe 25 years old) said, "Oops!" which nearly caused my husband to punch her in the face. "He said, 'You cannot say that while you are pushing a needle into my wife's spine!"

6. My heart rate is normally so low that it won't even register on the machine after I have been running hard on the treadmill for 30 minutes.

I am currently working on an idea that came to me while I struggled with "Collection". I realized that I wanted to go back to the basics of my color and palate and do some intense studies on the foundation of my abstracts. This is the first to come from this idea.

"Collection" was such a process for me. I began this painting trying to record each step of my production and then realized that it was actually interfering with my process. I stopped taking pictures of the evolution and just PAINTED. Finally, it felt right. So here it is, finally. Completed yesterday.

It is starting to resemble an old painting of mine...don't ya think? Still feel this one is changing and don't think it is even close to finished.

Evolution of my new large painting, Work in progress

First I begin with laying the linework in harsh box like patterns trying to determing where this painting will take me.

Next I begin a bit of softening those box shape patterns and working out not only my palette but the color scheme.

I then work on the "flow" of the painting and try to focus on the "forms" within the painting.

Next I begin to "paint out" portions and forms and now am beginning to think it is missing something huge.

P.S. When I asked my 5 year old what he thought it was missing, his response was, "I think you should paint a picture of Tony Hawk right in the middle." Now that is something huge! Stay tuned for more! Meg

Until I flipped through my portfolio folder saved under "My Pictures" today, I had never noticed this before.

I kind of see something here...a similarity...sense of unity, or something. Two different mediums, two different surfaces. Very different styles and technique. So what is it? I cannot explain it.
